Memorable Scenes

Scene One: This Gun of the Hand

Eli Lapp
This gun of the hand is for the taking of human life. We believe it is wrong to take life, that is only for God. Many times wars have come and people have said "You must fight, you must kill, it is the only way to preserve the good." But Sammuel, there is never only one way, remember that. Would you kill another man?

Sammuel

I would only kill a bad man.

Eli Lapp

Only the bad man, I see, and you know this bad man by sight? You are able to look into their hearts and see this badness?

Sammuel

I can see what they do, I have seen it.

Eli Lapp

And having seen, you become one of them. Don't you understand? What you take into your hands, you take into your heart...

Scene Two: Bee Sting

Amish Man
Jacob was a good farmer. None better.

2nd Amish

But not the man to buy a horse for you. Hochleifner, wasn't it your father sold him that horse with a ruptured testicle? Told him it was a bee sting made him limp that way.

Hochleitner

That horse had one good ball. That's all it takes.

Memorable lines:

John Book: Lady, you take my picture with that thing I'm going to rip your brassiere off and strangle you with it.

John Book: If we'd made love last night, I'd have had to stay, or you'd have had to leave.

Eli Lapp: You be careful out among them English.

Daniel Hochleifner: Your hole is better now?
John Book: Yeah, it's pretty much healed.
Daniel Hochleifner: Good, then you can go home.

Rachel: Enjoying your reading?
John: Oh yeah, I'm learning a lot about manure.

Eli: You never had your hands on a teet before?
John: Not one this big.
